Say Yes Student Spotlight: Giselle Ozelek

As a first-generation college student, saying yes is the one thing that has allowed me to achieve my goals and has opened many doors for me.

Where did you go to high school, and when did you graduate?

I attended the Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central (ITC) and graduated in June 2023.

What college are you going to & what is your major(s)/minor(s)?

I am currently attending Syracuse University where I am double majoring in Policy Studies and Spanish Language, Literature and Culture.

What do you like most about college?

I like interacting with different professors and staff while at college. Everyone here is very welcoming and willing to offer support in other areas outside of academics, like career advising and resume building.

What are your goals after college (career, future plans, etc.)?

My goals after college are to attend graduate school and obtain my M.P.A. at Syracuse University. I also hope to work for the local government here in Syracuse with community engagement and planning.

How did you learn about Say Yes to Education Syracuse?

I was first exposed to Say Yes in elementary school where I attended the Say Yes after school program. I was also able to familiarize myself with staff and meet Ahmeed Turner while in high school during my summer internship opportunity with Say Yes.

What does Say Yes mean to you?

For me, Say Yes means going after every opportunity available. As a first-generation college student, saying yes is the one thing that has allowed me to achieve my goals and has opened many doors for me. I wouldn’t be able to be where I am without this.

What advice would you give high school students who are considering seeking a college degree through Say Yes?

Everyone at Say Yes wants to see you succeed, so don’t be scared to reach out and speak to staff. Always remember that you don’t have to go through college alone, and Say Yes is a great place to start when seeking for help.

Anything else you want to add? (Fun facts, etc.)

I am very thankful for the support I have received from Say Yes so far and look forward to continuing with them throughout my college journey!
